Music

As our opening sequence has dialogue running through the majority of it, we had to be specific with the music we had chosen so it didn't overpower the dialogue.
We created our music on garage band. From using this programme, we were able to choose specific musical references which related to our sequence and the thriller/horror genre. The music we had chosen to use were non copyright so we were able to use it.
For our first attempt on creating our music, we had a slightly upbeat piano melody with slight changes throughout the whole sequence, but this sounded too 'happy' and it didn't have enough character in it, so we decided to mix about some other instruments and find sounds which were relevant to the sequence.
We were able to create a piece of music successfully, and it fits in perfectly with the sequence, adding more character to it.
However, we had to alter the volume on both the speech and the film score, so we can hear all of the dialogue throughout.

production company

We have chosen to do a 'Hammer Production Film' because in our research we found out the hammer do a lot of horror/thriller films so this would go well with our film because it genre is a horror/thriller.
From looking on the Hammer Productions website, we have found that they have done similar horror/thriller films such as:

  • the quiet ones
  • the women in black
  • let me in
  • the residents

From finding out this production company has produced these films from a similar genre, we feel it would be appropriate to use for our film.

Catch Me If You Can - Title Sequence

In the film Catch Me if You Can, it starts off showing the production Dream Works Pictures. The editing of this has certain words stretched out as if they was trying to run away and it fits in with the theme.

When the person who does the music is shown, the sequence shows a piano, so they link in with each other.

In this image you can see the title of the scene. The section where it says 'me' is drifting away like a cloud. This links in with the title of the film. It also makes the audience think that the person who is running away is hard to catch, like a cloud, they are easy to drift away.

Shooting

Claire and I shot our film opening on the 8th of January 2013. We went to our local park, Ravenscroft park in Barnet. We felt that this was a good place to film because of the surroundings of trees and grass etc. This park was also a good choice because it has a well structured footpath which was an ideal place to go for a run.
Claire, Jemma and I all acted, with Claire filming the majority of the sequence. We set the equipment up and we both explained to our other actor what she had to do. Claire and I both took part in being in the film and filming parts too. Myself and our actor came dressed like they were going for a run. We focused on what we was wearing because it had to be obvious that we was going for a jog. This also looked more professional because you would not see two girls in the park with a face full of make up and in really nice clothes going for a run.
Claire set the camera up in a good position to be able to get the whole shot in, then we filmed all of the parts we needed doing lots of different takes from different angles. We did this so we could use lots of different shots when it came to editing.
At the end of the filming we managed to get a shot of an ambulance driving past. We did this to make the sequence look more realistic.

The only problem with our filming is that the microphone did not work so no sound was recorded. Also, we are not fully convinced with the level of filming, as it was our first time, we weren't completely familiar with what we should have been doing, so we have decided to reshoot the sequence, and this time make sure that the sound works.

opening (first take)

AS Media StudiesPlanning my film openingClaire Bowman and Mia Marr

For our film opening we decided to create a sequence with a thriller genre.
Our film opening is set in a park where there is two female characters, Mia and Jemma,  jogging.

They decided to take a break and sit on a bench until Jemma feels she is going to be sick.

She runs over to a bush behind them, instead of being sick she screams as she sees a body laying in the bush. Mia is then startled and runs over to Jemma where she is in shock and sees the body too.

Mia runs off to find help whilst Jemma rings the emergency services and continues to see whether the unknown person is alive or not.

Mia couldn't find any help but thankfully the emergency services come and the young girl who is presumed dead is taken away in the ambulance.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark - title sequence

The title sequence is playing at the beginning of the film whilst the actors, production team, director and the other people involved in the film are introduced. This is making sure the audience is aware of everyone involved and engages them to watch the rest of the movie.
From the start of the film, I can see that it is action/adventure movie because of the setting, music and costume of the characters. The music is tense and builds up the adventurous expectations of the movie.
The opening of the film introduces the main protagonists of the film. The focus is mainly on Indiana Jones whom is who we see at the start to finish.
Close up shots are mainly used on Indiana Jones and the setting around him to indicate that he is the main character and to show the setting and to help indicate the genre of the film. The close ups used shows the audience his appearance. One important title which is used is 'South America 1936' which enables the audience to know the whereabouts of the characters.

The beginning of the film shoes that the film is an adventure film from the shorts if the sights of the mountains. Also, later on in the opening we see men walking through a rainforest, this also states very clearly that its an adventure film.

The first time some of the characters are introduced is when they walk into the shot, one by one, with their back to the camera. you then see them walking through the rainforest.
