Music video timeline

Elvis Presley 
50s - classic pop, r&b, rock and roll, blues, country music, jazz, folk music
Musicals first came about. It was a breakthrough for music videos. The main styles of music videos were influenced from classical Hollywood films such as 'Diamonds are a girls best friend' from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.









The Beatles
60s - beat music, the british invasion, british blues boom, british psychedelia

Music videos became more popular as lip-syncing became much more possible to do.









Abba
70s - Top of the Pops - bands had to send in videos because as they became more popular they were not able to always perform on the show so they had to send in a music video to be played or at least a recording of their song.

1975 - "Bohemean Rhapsody" by Queen was released and marked the beginning of a groundbreaking music video era.







Thriller

80s - in 1981, the US video channel MTV launched, airing "Video Killed the Radio Star" and began an era of 24 hour-a-day music on television.






Spice Girls
90s - 2005 saw the launch of the website Youtube, which made the viewing of online video much faster and easier.
