Lip-syncing Tutorial

Lip-synching in music is "moving the lips in synchronisation with pre-recorded speech or song"
With help from my media teacher and media technician I was able to

  • Key skill for all editors especially music videos
  • linked visuals with audio recording
  • used makers on waveforms of footage and separately recorded audio to sync together

Music Video Research

  1. How do they visually differentiate between verse & chorus?
  2. How do they use the beat & rhythm in the visual style?
  3. How do they showcase the stars?
  4. How much do the visuals relate to the lyrics? Think %
  5. What’s the overall concept?
The genre of my song is Pop Acoustic with a twist of fun.

  1. Throughout the majority of the song, Nutini is on stage with a band singing. However, throughout some of the video it has a narrative going on showing the 'Jenny' character.
  2. When it shows the band performing, they are moving about to the beat of the music. There is not an actual dance performance.
  3. It shows many close up's of Paolo Nutini when he is singing with the band. These close up's are all slightly angled, not always showing his face clearly. Nutini is also acting in the video.
  4. The visuals relate about 40% to the video.
  5. The song is about Nutini trying to convince a woman that just because he is 18, she should still marry him.

PARODY
Blink 182 - All The Small Things

  1. Throughout the video, the band are mimicing Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, N'Sync, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. The lyrics and visuals do not relate at all except for when Tom DeLong sings 'carry me home' he creates a cradle with his arms.
  2. The three band members are dancing throughout the majority of the music video. However, the dancing isn't particularly in time or beat with the music.
  3. The trio are always shown as Tom Delong (singer/guitar) in the middle with Mark Hoppus (bass) and Travis Barker (drummer) either side of him.
  4. The visuals do not relate to the video at all.
  5. The overall concept of the video is to create a parody of different artists.

  1. Throughout the beginning 3/4 of the video, Olly Murs is in a car or at the police station. In the end, he is outside a females house dancing and singing "I just want you to dance with me tonight".

The Autuer Theory - Hype Williams

A theory developed in the 1950's and states that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.
That the auteur brings something unique and personal to each of the videos they make. This shows the directors own creative vision which you can recognize straight away.

Hype Williams
Hype Williams is an American music video and film director.
Williams has created a number of music videos for many artists, including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G, LL Cool J, Nas, Missy Elliott , Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Aaliyah, Christina Aguilera, Coldplay, Ne-Yo and many, many more.

A "signature style" involves placing shots in regular widescreen ratio, while a second shot is split and placed in the upper and lower bars. Creating a "banner" look.
In addition to this, he frequently utilizes aerial and tracking shots which often move backwards or forwards, some techniques. It is a method often used by Hype which allows his videos to be dynamic, multidimensional and atmospheric as opposed to having static camera angles.

Music Video Analysis - Justin Bieber - Baby

Filming for the music video began during the week of January 25, 2010, in Los Angeles. It was filmed at Universal CityWalk by director  Ray Kay.
Ludacris said that the video is like a 2010 version of Michael Jacksons The Way You Make Me Feel.
Bieber said the the video will capture the songs message of trying to woo back a girl. in explaining the concept of the video, Bieber said, It starts off, I really like this girl, but we didnt get along; we couldnt be together. Basically I want her back and Im kind of going through the whole thing. Im chasing her around, trying to get her, and shes kind of playing hard to get, but Im persistent. I keep going.
The video takes place in a mall-like setting with a bowling alley and more.
Singer and actress Jasmine Villegas portrays Biebers love interest in the video. Biebers friends, Young Money artists Drake and Lil Twist also appear in the video, along with Tinashe Kachingwe and jerkin crew The Rangers.

music video types

Performance -
Mcfly - All about you
Performance videos mainly focus on the artist or band just plainly performing either on their own or in front of a crowd. They never usually have a narrative and the camera angles usually repeat themselves throughout the video to focus on the artist or band.

Narrative -
Taylor swift ft Ed Sheeran - Everything has changed
The way a story or tale is told so that the elements are structured and organised in such a way that makes sense to the audience. However, some narrative videos are usually mixed with a little bit of performance.

Conceptual

Chris Cunningham & Aphex Twins - Monkey Drummer
conceptual based videos tend to not relate to the song.

search for my song

my brother has always been a musician since I can remember and I have grown up listening to his music.
He always writes his own songs as well as being able to play the guitar, bass an drums.
he had a btec in musical performance and is currently attending city of Westminster studying music technology.
I am glad I have chosen to use my brothers music for my song and music video because I am very familiar with his songs and I am able to choose from a wide variety of his songs to pick which one i prefer the most and I would feel the most comfortable working with.

evaluation of the foundation production

Directors Commentary

The scene is first set with a long establishing shot of one of the protagonists Jemma. This shows the surroundings and that they are in a public park on a normal day.

The film score is of a non-diagetic string orchestra which shows the setting is calm.

Whilst putting in the titles I had to use a wire frame to allow the text to move around the screen and I also used the overlay boundaries to make sure they were on the screen.

I had to make sure all the titles were the right size and colour and that they were in the right place. I made the title of the film in red to resemble the Devil and the rest of the titles in white so that they stand out to the audience.

The non-diagetic music stops and you can hear the diagetic sound of the protagonists. The music then comes back but it is more of a dramatic sound, and this is used when Jemma discovers the body in the bushes.

An over the shoulder shot of the phone is used to make the audience see what the character is seeing so that they can feel as if they are in her shoes.

Dream Works Pictures

DreamWorks Studios is a motion picture company formed by partners Steven Spielberg, Stacey Snider and The Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group. The studio currently has a worldwide distribution deal with The Walt Disney Studios, who will market and distribute their films.

Distribution company

I chose Trinity Films as my distribution company because during my research I found that they have distributed many films with a horror genre so I decided it would be perfect for my film.
Trinity has established itself a dynamic, highly All Rights film distribution and production company. It is based in London, it has earned an enviable reputation for releasing fresh, challenging and unique feature films from around the world.
Films such as Red, White and Blue  are of a similar genre to my film and this is one of Trinitys biggest distributions.

Choosing the name of the film

When it came to choosing the name of our film, it took us a great deal of thought. We first thought of calling our film 'The Run' because the film starts off with the two girls running and then they find the mysterious body. However, we decided to change it because 'The Run' does not sound like a thriller movie. It had to have more power in the name, and something that would definitely resemble a thriller so when people heard the name they would know which genre it was going to be.
So then we decided to research a few thriller film names and this is where we came up with the name 'Devils Own Luck'. We decided to stick with this name because when the two girls find the mysterious body, throughout the rest of the film they are cursed with bad luck and they end up coming face to face with the Devil himself.
This name is definitely more related to our film without giving away too much detail. This name is more relevant to our film and catches the public's attention to want to go and watch it.

Final Shooting

This is an extreme long shot of Jemma running towards Mia.
This is a long shot of Jemma just before she meets Mia.
This is a long shot of Jemma and Mia jogging.
This is a close up shot of the side of Jemma and Mia, the title of the film is included in the shot.
This is a two shot of Jemma and Mia speaking. We had to make it a close shot so we were able to pick up all the speech in this shot.
This is a close up shot of Jemma wanting to be sick in the bush.
This is the only shot of the body, only seeing it once makes the audience want to carry on watching so they find out whats happened.
This is a close up shot of Jemma running to get Mia once she had seen the body.
This is a long shot of Mia with the bench in the background.  It shows how far away they were sitting from the body.
This is an extreme close up of Jemma ringing 999. Being able to see 999 makes the phone call seem more realistic.
This is a close up of Jemma on the phone to the ambulance.

This is a long shot of Jemma running to get Mia after she had spoken to the ambulance.

re-editing

In February, we reshot our film. This time we made a fewmajor improvements, including making sure our sound was working. We also changed the location of our film.
After we had made these improvements, we then created the music and completed all our editing. After this, we had a double check over what we had created and decided we still needed to make some major improvements.
     These improvements included:

  • Changing the name of our film to make it sound more like a thriller.
  • Changing the pace of some of our titles so they fit in more with what's going on in the sequence.
  • Changing the volume of the music so it would be level with the dialogue used in some of the sequence.
  • Changing the whole music piece because when we finally fit it in with the sequence it didn't sound as scary and convincing as we had hoped.
  • By changing the music we added more strings and deeper music, we edited out some of our shots to make it more scary, for example, we cut out more shots of the body on the ground because when you see fewer shots it makes it seem more tense.
